Gerdt von Bassewitz’s classic children’s tale was premiered as a stage play in 1912, and to celebrate the centenary of this beloved story, the Boston German Saturday School showcased six new song settings of original verses found in the play.  The settings are written for voice accompanied by piano, and they are also adaptable for children’s voices accompanied by a chamber ensemble.  These compositions respond to the formidable challenge of matching the humor and childlike sense of wonder that Bassewitz captures so accurately in his storytelling.
